#1: The Big Container Harvest: 3 Tubs Produced HOW Many Sweet Potatoes!?

This one is a favorite of mine. I cannot believe how many sweet potatoes he grew in just 3 tubs! Of course, he clearly used a wonderful soil blend, and kept the tubers out of reach of pests in the yard. He says the critters tend to eat them up, so he went with these big old tubs. It definitely worked out for him; that’s nearly $50 worth of sweet potatoes, or well over $100 worth if they’re organic!

#2: Mound VS Deep Raised Bed Harvest: Which Performed Best?

This harvest is pretty cool, as it’s a comparison between mound grown sweet potatoes and raised bed sweet potatoes. Notice how small of an area the potatoes in the raised bed grew in; it’s AMAZING how many tubers he pulled from that small section! Raised beds are incredible for growing large harvests of sweet potatoes, but it can be difficult to fill up those beds (and fairly expensive) when you don’t have a large amount of compost. But… just check out that harvest.

#3: Metal Wash Tub (Container) Harvest: Another Jaw Dropping Sweet Potato Haul!

The metal wash tub isn’t the first thing you would choose to grow your sweet potatoes in… but this video was another intriguing share. Not only is it another huge harvest; it shows the true power of the sweet potato root. Check out what these roots have done to the bottom of this metal tub! While a harvest like this wasn’t expected from his tubs, it indeed occurred; the resulting crowded tubers were rather odd shaped, but this is what happens when the tubers do not have enough space to grow.

#4: A Slightly Modest Harvest, Perhaps Shaded?

This harvest was more on the moderate side, with a bed of roughly 25 sq ft.  It is still a wonderful harvest for such a small amount of space; however, I personally think the harvest could have been a bit better! I think this spot may have been shaded, judging by the small trunks I could see (as well as the privacy fence) in the video. Sweet potatoes love full sun, and this is a critical component of a good harvest. Without full sun, the plants cannot store as much energy in the form of tubers. Still, again, this was an excellent harvest! This goes to show you that sweet potatoes are real troopers in the garden, especially for beginners.

Six months is quite a long time to leave sweet potatoes in the ground, and this would not be possible in a majority of growing zones. Sweet potatoes do not tolerate cool weather; this is probably why his harvest was fairly moderate in size rather than small; instead of getting 3 or 4 months of full sun, they may have gotten 6 months of partial sun.
